Enjoyed the balmy weather of Friday evening by indulging in a couple of interesting drinks (including the marvellously named Bruges Zot) at The Dove.
Followed it up with dinner at Bistrotheque — lamb rump, grilled provencal vegetables, garlic crisps. Very tasty indeed, though the service left a little (OK, a lot) to be desired.
Picked up some lovely sausages, a crêpe and some lovely...

Lachhiman Gurung
On a day when one of Britain’s most fearsome, loyal and skilled regiments have been stiffed by a pathetic attempt at being diplomatic (defended by an even more pathetic, weasly little man), it’s worth remembering folks like Lachhiman Gurung:
“On 12/13 May 1945 at Taungdaw, Burma (now Myanmar), Rifleman Lachhiman Gurung was manning the most forward post of his platoon which bore...
Confusing error message
From a human rather than a computer this time. In response to a request to book a table for tomorrow night at Buen Ayre:
“Dear Sir, thank you very much for your interest in dining with us. We recommend that for tables of 4 or more people bookings are made at least a week in advance. We hope you give us a try soon.”
So … is that a no?

Monsters vs Aliens (3D)
I suppose the first thing to say is that — having not seen a 3D film since about 1988 — I was seriously surprised at how good 3D technology is. I think the new Ray Charles style glasses are probably a little better than the old-school red/blue 3D glasses, and the show-off moments — like the bored guy playing with a paddle ball — really are quite impressive (in that case, I...

The Hunter
It’s almost impossible to describe Julia Leigh’s debut novel: a dark, haunting, thrilling, mysterious … monologue. Leigh attempts to draw the reader into the mind of a cold, emotionless killer on a quest to find and kill the last Tasmanian Tiger (assuming it’s not extinct already).
At 170 pages, The Hunter is a short, tightly-focused novel. It’s gripping,...

Directed by Andrew Dominik (2007)
Yes, it may be nearly two years old, but good things come, etc. I’ve been waiting for the right time to watch this movie for about a year, and on Saturday night I decided it’d never come so I better just get on with it.
I think ‘breathtaking’ would undersell Andrew Dominik’s achievement with this film, it’s an almost surreal...

Bottega Prelibato
Gorgeous little Italian deli/café/restaurant on Rivington Street in Shoreditch. Popped there for lunch today and had some absolutely perfect penne gigante pasta (made in house) with a simple but absolutely mouth watering tomato (imported from italy), ricotta and basil sauce. Simple, but absolutely delicious - like the best Italian food.
The toasted ciabatta sandwiches were delicious too - the...
